Winamp, the Ultimate Media Player, is now available in beta on AndroidTM (2.1 OS and above). It offers a complete media management solution by seamlessly syncing with the Winamp desktop library. In addition to high quality playback and persistent player controls, Winamp for Android offers wireless sync with your Winamp Desktop (Winamp 5.59 beta required). Standard USB syncing also available.
Winamp was released for PCs back in 1997, and quickly rose to the top in terms of popularity of music/media players on the Windows OS (Operating System). On October 20, 2010, Winamp made the jump to a new platform, Android. While the application available in the Android Market is officially a beta, it is still a very solid app with only a few, hardly noticeable bugs. Shipping with a slick, intuitive interface, Winamp for Android brings competition to the Android Market in the free media apps section.
Winamp for Android’s largest selling feature is the ability to “mobilize your library”, meaning Android phones can sync with PCs, specifically the Winamp Windows client (if the 5.59 beta version is installed). This sync feature also works over wifi, so the android phone can be synced from another room, provided both devices are logged into the same wireless network.
This app also comes with many of the standard mobile music player features such as play queue management, easily navigable menus, and a widget player with music controls. A new feature to free music apps from the Android Mraket is the lock screen widget that allows users to control music without actually unlocking the phone, consequently saving some time for the user.
Winamp for Android also brings some of its main features over from the Windows version of the application including Last.fm scrobbling (uploading songs played by the client to the service’s servers), and the ability to provide song information from other sources across the web, from Pandora to Wikipedia to YouTube. Features such as SHOUTcast, which are available in the desktop version are said to be in development on the official Winamp blog.
